My Professional Experience and unique approach will provide the traction necessary for Athletes to hit the ground running. I personally work with each Athlete to help them achieve their Individual Athletic Goals and Targets. I can push you, but most importantly I will motivate you. Early on, I identify what each client is capable of with my goal being to help them reach, and then exceed that potential.

The Love of Running

I am a fully licenced coach in running fitness - through UK Athletics, with 5 years experience in coaching runners and triathletes.
On the coaching side - I have been a fully Qualified Ski and Snowboard Instructor since 2009, through the Canadian Ski and Snowboard Alliance - teaching - Young Children from the Age of 3, Teenagers, School Groups, Young Adults, Adults and Celebrities - all the way through from complete beginners to elite race levels.
I have also had the privilege to qualify as a Professional Disability Ski Instructor - where I have worked with students who are Blind, Deaf, Amputees and some whom have different Special Educational Needs.
So what better way to pass on my professional knowledge and experience of being a sports coach to the passion of sport I enjoy and love - which is running.
A keen runner myself, I have competed in many events over the years including - 5 x Dubai Marathons, 2 x London Marathons 2 x Brighton Marathons, and 3 x Ironman Events along with various Ultra-marathons.
I firmly believe that anybody can achieve and accomplish anything they set their mind and heart on, with the right support at their side.
I don’t have an athletics background, and for this reason a lot of my work is focused on helping Beginner Runners and Club Runners find the confidence to start their own running journeys - as I know how daunting it can be to take that first step.
Whilst I would always encourage a very individual and flexible approach to your training, with a Personalized Plan created just for you I would work hard to produce some generic plans to help you work towards your next event, whether that be your first 5k, Marathon Distance Event and even different distances of Triathlon all the way through to Ironman.
I offer coaching to runners both online and face to face. At present I am only looking to coach adults, but I am thinking of introducing coaching to under 18s in the near future.
I first began running at a very young age, when at School.
I got the inspiration from my Dad who was a very keen runner himself.
After doing a lot of running and training by myself, I decided to join my local affiliated club back in 2012, which was Cwm Ogwr Running Club and since then I have helped form Cowbridge Moovers Running Club which was set up in 2018.
I am also a Co-Founder of Pen Y Bont Triathlon Club which was also formed in the year 2018.
Within these time frames I have been a part of (Tri Dubai) 2013 - 2016 - which is a Triathlon Club based in Dubai, who now have over 3,000 members. I believe it is the biggest Triathlon Club in the Middle East.
When I was a part of Tri Dubai, that is when I knew I wanted to become a Running Coach.
After returning from Dubai in 2016 I joined Pencoed Panthers who gave me the opportunity to become a (LIRF) Leader in Running Fitness back in 2017 - before going on to gain my (CIRF) Coach in Running Fitness, which I will forever be greatful for.
Whilst being a part of Pencoed Panthers I was also part of Pencoed Triathlon Club - where I spent 1 Year training for my first full Ironman distance race.
Since becoming a qualified running coach, I believe I have plenty of experience as a coach - particularly in helping brand new runners get started and helping the more experienced runners pursue their personal goals and targets.

Group sessions offer a new and exciting approach to your running training. I have developed my group sessions from drills and lessons used by some of the most Elite Athletes and Coaches.

I was very fortunate to have one to one coaching to improve my running with Joey before the first lock down. Joey was very professional and caring in his approach. Every training session I had was different, working on technique, stride, speed, agility, breathing, confidence and posture. Run Wales were on the look out for a running coach to facilitate a couch to 5km programme within the Vale, with a view for the group to then become a fully fledged running group. DJH coaching did not disappoint in filling this role. He was enthusiastic, diligent and extremely professional. He successfully coached and mentored a full cohort of beginner runners to complete the elusive 5km and was received with incredibly high regard. I can’t recommend DJH enough, the social running group was established by his hand holding approach and encouragement, and as an organisation we’ll be sure to use his services in due course, so, therefore comes with a high recommendation from me! The two great things about coaching with Joey are 1) his genuine passion and drive to help others improve 2) his technical knowledge and experience with running itself.
Having a past history of running I actually learnt more in 6wks with Joey than I did with 5yrs of previous marathons and various other races. He has the ability to break everything down and emphasis the importance of making your runs easier. I saw massive improvements and took 6 mins of my 5km time.

I attended an 8 week 5k Performance Program under Joeys coaching. His knowledge was second to none and his hints and tips and sessions on breathing, posture and foot placement enabled me to start to actually enjoy my running and feel more comfortable doing it. His sessions were varied and focused on different aspects of running they were well delivered and great to participate in. With Joeys guidance and training at the end of the 8 weeks achieved a 5k personal best. I still use what Joey taught me, his techniques and sessions and have since improved my 5k personal best and 10k. I would highly recommend Joey a great guy who is a great instructor.

I attended Joey’s 5k Improvers running programme. I was nervous and apprehensive about going as I am not a fast runner and I didn’t know many people in the triathlon club. Joey made everyone feel comfortable and he was very encouraging and praised individuals frequently. He is very approachable. Although I could not attend every session due to work commitments, when I did go the sessions were planned well and carried out in a professional manner. Joey taught us about different parts of running such as breathing techniques and your posture. We took part in efforts sessions which were varied and suitable for all abilities. Joey’s programme was enjoyable and I didn’t feel awkward or slow. I even managed to knock nearly 2 minutes off my 5k time.
I’ve also attended triathlon club sea swims and cycle rides when Joey has led the groups. He is always friendly, approachable and encourages you to reach your full potential.

I can't recommend Joey enough, he devised a couch 2 5k plan which was over 9 weeks. I was a complete novice and could not run at all. I then did his 5k improvers course. He is extremely professional and with his expertise and knowledge advised on slight tweaks in my running style, breathing techniques, how to build endurance and adjust my posture. Which has made me a much more efficient runner. His patience and calm demeanor made me feel at ease at all times, he has encouraged and supported me throughout the whole process and beyond. Lastly when I started my 5K Improvers course my Time was 43:33 and after the 9 Weeks I ran a new PB of 41:10. Now after a few more weeks of Training Hard I have now gone out and ran 39:11. 👍
